About to the Club

Our club was founded in 1985 and its name was taken from the Hartbeespoort dam, situated between the Magalies Mountains, in the North West Province. The dam lies 30km west of Pretoria and 60km northwest of Johannesburg. The 56km shoreline of the dam provides us with beautiful and scenic running routes in all directions.

Hartbeespoort actually consists of a few smaller towns namely Schoemansville, Ifafi, Melodie, Meerhof and Cosmos. Last mentioned lies on the opposite shore of the dam.

A fairly new addition to the area, is the Pecan Wood golf course on the South shore of the dam.

Apart from the local mentioned towns, we also draw members from other surrounding towns namely, Brits, Mooinooi, Broederstroom and Skeerpoort. The club shows great growth for such a small area, with the membership almost doubling up in the year 2000, to 240 members.

At the foot of the Magalies mountain, in Schoemansville, lies our beautiful clubhouse, with its thatch roof melting into the surrounding nature. At the entrance hangs a stuffed "Trophy" of a Hartebeest, which forms part of the club's identity and logo. The clubhouse is positioned on the western side of the Hartbeespoort High School and all our club activities are conducted from there.

Club activities

Tuesdays we hold our weekly time trials, at 17h30 in the winter and 17:45 in the summer, consisting of a challenging 4.7 and 8 km route. After the run, we have the usual social gathering of members ending up in a "Bring and Braai".

Saturdays we have planned "Long Slow Distances" (LSD's) onto one of the many inspiring running routes surrounding the dam. See the Captain's Log for details of weekly activities.

Club Management Team

An enthusiastic and committed committee, who carries a wonderful spirit through the club, manages Hartbeespoort Marathon Club.

Our current chairman is Pieter Louw and club captain, Chris du Plooy.

Races

The club organises and presents 2 major races during the year namely:

Old Mutual 'OM DIE DAM' in March consisting of :
Om die Dam, a 50km ultra marathon.
Om die Dam, 21.1km half marathon.
Om die Dam, 5km Fun run.
Rage Marketing 'OM DIE Berg' in August consisting of :
Om die Berg, 21,1km half marathon.
